Good News for some

No long-term lung damage from marijuana: study

People who occasionally smoke marijuana do not suffer long-term lung damage the way cigarette smokers do, and may actually experience a slight improvement, said a 20-year US study published Tuesday.

Since the research included more than 5,000 people over a long time span, the authors said it should help clear up some of the confusion about the risks of marijuana smoking, which is increasingly common in the United States.

However, they warned that the risks of heavy marijuana use were difficult to assess and cautioned against regular or frequent smoking.

"Marijuana is still an illegal drug, and it has many complicated effects on the human body and its function," said Stefan Kertesz, senior author of the research in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"In our findings we see hints of harm in pulmonary function with heavy use, and other studies have shown that marijuana use increases a user's likelihood of a heart attack... and impairs the immune system's ability to fight disease."

The data came from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study (CARDIA), funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which aimed to examine heart disease and how it develops.

Researchers recruited subjects between the ages of 18-30 in four US cities and followed them from 1985 to 2006.

They measured marijuana use with a methodology called "joint-years," in which one joint-year of exposure would be the equivalent of smoking 365 joints or pipe bowls.

For those who reported smoking an average of one joint a day for seven years, or one joint/week for 49 years, the study found no harmful lung effects resulted.

"With up to seven joint-years of life-time exposure, we found no evidence that increasing exposure to marijuana adversely affects pulmonary function," the study said.

Researchers at the University of Alabama Division of Preventive Medicine and at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Birmingham measured lung function by assessing the force and volume of each person's exhale.

Those who smoked cigarettes tended to have much higher lifetime exposure to smoking than marijuana users, but when researchers adjusted the data for current and lifetime exposure, they found smokers' lung function got worse over time while pot smokers' lung function actually improved slightly.

"At levels of marijuana exposure commonly seen in Americans, occasional marijuana use was associated with increases in lung air flow rates and increases in lung capacity," said Kertesz.

However, the gains -- while statistically significant -- were so small that most people would likely not notice at all, he added.

"It's not enough of an increase that would make you feel better," he said.

"Healthy adults can blow out three to four liters of air in one second. The amount of gain, on average, from marijuana is small, 50 ccs or roughly a fifth of a can of coke. So it's not something that would be noticeable."

According to government figures, marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Some 16.7 million Americans ages 12 and older reported using marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed in 2009.

Medical use of marijuana is now legal in 16 states and the US capital region to alleviate the symptoms of cancer, AIDS and glaucoma.

Cellphone signals jammed, 15K cops on full alert for Nazarene Feast to counter terror threat

MalacaƱang on Monday confirmed that it asked the telecommunication companies to temporarily disconnect their services in the route of the Black Nazarene procession.

In a text message to reporters, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said "this is part of the security measures agreed upon during the meeting on Sunday."

She added this was confirmed by Philippine National Police Director General Nicanor Bartolome.

Bartolome told reporters, "Actually pinag-uusapan lagi 'yun dahil there’s always a possibility na magamit but hindi ako privy kung anong oras at kung anong area."

He added the measure is for the security of the devotees: "Kapakanan ng marami ang binabantayan dito."

President Benigno Aquino III on Sunday revealed that local terrorists groups are planning to disrupt the celebration.

Some 15,000 police personnel were also ordered deployed on "full alert" for the Feast of the Black Nazarene, President Benigno Aquino III said Monday.

In an entry on his Facebook account, Aquino said ambulances and six hospitals in Metro Manila are on standby to attend to the devotees.

"Around 15,000 policemen on full alert are deployed today for the feast of the Black Nazarene. Ambulances and six hospitals in Metro Manila are on standby, while K9 units will be in areas where the procession will pass," he said.

He reiterated his advice to devotees "not to bring cellphones, weapons, and fireworks" in attending the procession.

Aquino said the yearly procession of the Black Nazarene, whose image is believed to have miraculous powers, is "expected to last for 10 to 12 hours."

Police secured the devotees early Monday, but ground commander Senior Superintendent Fidel Posadas declined to talk about the supposed terror threat.

The procession started on a festive but slow note after a Mass celebrated by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle. –KG, GMA News

Some Tips For Using Windows Sound Recorder

Record at CD Quality:
By default, Windows Sound Recorder records using Radio Quality - this produces static and crackling in the file. In order to produce a CD Quality recording, the properties of the audio file must be set correctly before recording:

1. Open Sound Recorder which is found in:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Sound Recorder.
2. Choose File, then Properties.
3. Click [Convert Now..].
4. Use the drop-down menu under Name. From the list, choose CD Quality.
5. Click [OK] twice to return to the main Sound Recorder window.
6. Save the file.
7. Once the file is saved, it is set as a CD Quality audio file - the file will still be open in Sound Recorder.
8. Start recording and save the file when complete.

Stopping the feedback:
If the computer makes a squealing sound when recording (called feedback) it is most likely caused by the microphone being enabled in both the Sound playback and Sound recording volume controls. To correct, open Sounds and Audio Devices from Control Panel. On the Audio tab, open the Sound playback volume control and mute the microphone. The microphone should be selected on the Sound recording volume control.

Set Power Scheme to avoid drop-outs:
Power Schemes are found by opening Power Options from Control Panel. The default Power Scheme for most mobile computers is Portable/Laptop. With the Portable/Laptop Power Scheme, the computer may slow the processor in order to save power. This can cause clicks or drop-outs in recordings. To fix this, set the Power Scheme to Always On. The Always On scheme does not slow the processor.

Note: Change the Power Scheme back to Portable/Laptop when finished recording in order to avoid excessive battery drain.

In case you lost your phone

IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identification) is a 15 digit number combination that is unique on your mobile phones. Usually this number is printed inside your mobile phone; you can view it once you remove the battery. Another way to know your IMEI is to key in “*#06#” on your mobile phone and it will give you the 15 digit number.  It’s better if you will write it down and keep it so in case you lost your phone you can contact your local operator and you can request to block that handset or mobile phone. Once it is blocked the handset can no longer be used even if they change its SIM.

Note: Blocking the handset thru the IMEI is not always applicable, it still depends on the local operator of your country.

Extras

Just like most of us, I'm also looking for a “raket” or sideline (2nd job). Since I don’t have special skills to capitalize on, I started reading books and articles hoping to have knowledge so maybe I can earn some extra. One thing I learned from reading is that there is no truth on the saying that there is no money in our country, in fact there is a lot of money circulating around in our country. We just have to look for the “in betweens” in certain industry and capitalize on the needs of that certain missing link in every industry. Each job, profession or business that you know needs a service from the other job, profession or business to support its operation. And in every industry there is a missing link on the operation that we can capitalize to earn even a little extra. We just need to be keep our eyes searching for those missing links.
